More Than 5,000 National Guard Troops Will Stay In Washington D.C. At Least Until March

A great number of National Guard troops will reportedly stay in the country’s capital for months or at least until mid-March.

As Major Matt Murphy confirmed in an interview with The Epoch Times, the number of soldiers present in Washington, DC will be gradually reduced but will remain above 5,000 until mid-March or longer.

According to the officials, the security threat is on-going which is why a part of the troops dispatched to maintain order following the January 6 insurrection will remain in DC.

“We have requested, because we do anticipate that there will be another national special security event occurring, the joint session of Congress. On behalf of the Metropolitan Police Department, we’ve made a request for continued National Guard support with traffic management and crowd control through January 30,” Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency director, Christopher Rodriguez, told the reporters.

Following the Capitol riot, over 25,000 National Guard troops were dispatched to the capital to secure the city. The majority have since been told to return with some 10,600 remaining in the area as of Thursday.

According to the reports, the National Guard has been requested to maintain a presence in the capital with some 7,000 members, whereas the number will be reduced to 5,000 by mid-March. As of this writing, it is not clear whether the remaining troops will be recalled after that.

“As we continue to work to meet the final post-inauguration requirements, the National Guard has been requested to continue supporting federal law enforcement agencies with 7,000 members and will draw down to 5,000 through mid-March,” Major Matt Murphy said in an interview with The Epoch Times.

“We are providing assistance such as security, communications, medical evacuation, logistics, and safety support to state, district, and federal agencies.”
