NASA astronaut Christina Koch has returned to earth after spending 328 days in space along with Luca Parmitano of the European Space Agency and Alexander Skvortsov of the Russian space agency.
Christina Koch landed in Kazakhstan on Thursday and broke the previous record for the longest stay in space by a woman set by NASA veteran Peggy Whitson in 2016-17.
NASA TV Reporter said: “Christina Koch, your record-holder. She is out, thumbs up and a huge smile. Christina, welcome home.”
Christina Koch, Luca Parmitano, and Alexander Skvortsov were waiting for a meal after being landed in Kazakhstan.
The reporter said to them that there are “enough chips and salsa on the NASA plane” before heading to NASA headquarters in Houston.
The reporter said: “There are enough chips… salsa on the NASA plane heading home to accommodate several Mexican restaurants back in Houston, I will tell you. No shortage of her favorite delicacy on the way home.”
Koch was all smiles when she landed in Kazakhstan. She said: “I am so overwhelmed and happy right now.”
She also said that she wants to inspire the next generation of explorers.
Talking about her experience, she said it is really fun to be in a place where you can just bounce around between the ceiling and the floor whenever you want.
NASA said that Koch’s 328-days mission will help researchers in providing enough data on how weightlessness and space radiation affect the female body on long spaceflights.
NASA also said that Koch’s medical data will be helpful as they are planning a long-duration manned mission to Mars.
After landing in Kazakhstan, Koch was wrapped in blankets and was carried into a medical tent to restore her balance in gravity.
Koch then headed to NASA headquarters in Houston where she will undergo medical testing.
