A former NASA employee has spoken out and claimed he believes that alien life was already discovered on Mars over 40 years ago.
Scientist Gilbert V Levin recalled the work he did as a NASA scientist back during the Viking mission that was launched in 1975.
At that time, lander pairs and two orbiters were sent to Mars to capture colored photos of the surface of the Red Planet.
As the retired scientist also claimed, he was responsible for running a life-detection experiment based on samples obtained from Mars in 1976. The results allegedly turned out to be positive.
“I’m Convinced We Found Evidence of Life on Mars in the 1970s,” Mr. Levin titled his article.
“In summary, we have: positive results from a widely-used microbiological test; supportive responses from strong and varied controls; duplication of the LR results at each of the two Viking sites; replication of the experiment at the two sites; and the failure over 43 years of any experiment or theory to provide a definitive nonbiological explanation of the Viking LR results,” he wrote.
“What is the evidence against the possibility of life on Mars? The astonishing fact is that there is none. Furthermore, laboratory studies have shown that some terrestrial microorganisms could survive and grow on Mars.”
Speaking of the future of space exploration, Mr. Levin said he hopes to see more expeditions to Mars with the aim of discovering life.
“NASA has already announced that its 2020 Mars lander will not contain a life-detection test,” he added.
“In keeping with well-established scientific protocol, I believe an effort should be made to put life detection experiments on the next Mars mission.”
In one of his previous written works, Levin suggested that “plans for any Mars sample return mission should also take into account that such a sample may contain viable, even if dormant, alien life.”
