Speaker Nancy Pelosi said they need more security to face ‘the enemy within’ the House of Representatives.
She said during a press conference on Capitol Hill: “We will probably need a supplemental for more security for members when the enemy is within the House of Representatives.”
When asked who she meant by ‘the enemy within,’ she answered: “It means that we have members of Congress who want to bring guns onto the floor and have threatened violence on other members of Congress.”
Pelosi was referencing GOP Congresswoman Marjory Taylor Green who liked Facebook posts about executing top Democrats.
She was also referring to other Republican lawmakers to want to be armed in the Capitol.
Lawmakers are allowed to carry guns on the Capitol grounds and in their offices but they are not allowed to bring weapons into the House chamber.
Republican Congressman Andy Harriss of Maryland faced an investigation after she tried to bring a firearm onto the House floor.
To keep Congress members from bringing guns and other weapons, Pelosi decided to set up metal detectors and violators will face a $5,000 fine.
Other lawmakers are also concerned about some members carrying guns.
Several members wrote to Pelosi and other House leaders asking for more security as they are scared of the threats against them.
A copy of the letter obtained by Daily Mail reads: “Reflecting the tense and troubling times we live in, Members of Congress have reported receiving a significant uptick in threats of violence and even death.”
They ask for flexibility to use taxpayer-funded office expenses for increased security measures at their homes.
Pelosi vowed to look into additional funding, saying: “They shouldn’t have to have that money is for them to meet the needs of their constituents.”
