A 28-year-old mother has been arrested after she admitted to shooting her son after trying to cut his tongue out.
Kaitlyn Renee Higgins was charged with the murder of her 10-year-old son Kyon Higgins.
Police officers were dispatched to the mother’s home after receiving a report from a neighbor who said that she saw Higgins holding a gun and the child seemed unconscious and wrapped in a blanket.
Cops with the Louisville Metro Police Department arrived at the scene and found Higgins resting on the porch.
Officers noticed blood on the steps and when they opened the trunk of the mother’s car, they found Kyon’s body.
Higgins then admitted to shooting her son after she attempted to cut out his tongue, police said.
According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, Higgins was arraigned on charges of murder ‘stemming from domestic violence and tampering with evidence’.
She reportedly teared up in court and claimed that she hadn’t been allowed to contact anyone from prison.
“So I don’t even know where my child’s being buried or anything,” she told Jefferson County District Judge Jennifer Wilcox, who increased her bond from $250,000 to $500,000.
Miah Lancaster, the boy’s babysitter, told WLKY that she once saw Kyon with scratches on his neck and face a black eye. However, she failed to report it to Child Protection Services as she feared retaliation from the mother, who she knew possesses a weapon.
Lancaster said that she regrets that decision.
Speaking to WAVE 3 News, the babysitter said: “This should’ve ever happened. She had plenty of people, if she was struggling, to drop him off.
“We could’ve cared for him. One call is all it would’ve taken.”
As soon as she heard the news of Kyon’s death, Lancaster immediately went to the house to check Higgins’s 2-year-old son.
Police said that the other so is safe and is now in the care of relatives.
