A young mother has sold her twin sons for $9,000 so she could pay off her credit card bills.
The babies were not yet two weeks old when they were sold to two strange families who live more than 700km away from her hometown.
The Chinese mother in her 20s also purchased a new phone with the money.
Both the mother, known by her surname Ma, and her partner, known by his surname Wu, have been arrested by police. The twins were rescued and given to their grandparents.
The disturbing case was shared by police in Cixi in Zheikiang Province. They reported that when the woman gave birth to her twin sons, they were premature and had to be placed into incubators.
Wu didn’t show in the hospital and his parents also refused to help the mother out.
Ma started to view her babies as burden so she decided to sell them. One boy was sold for around 45,000 yuan ($6,329) and the other baby was sold for around 20,000 yuan ($2,813).
She paid off her credit card bills and purchased a new phone.
According to police, her partner Wu appeared and demanded her to pay off his gambling debts but Ma said that the money had already been spent.
Both babies were found and the families agreed to return them to the police after officers explained the severity of the case.
The boys were given to Ma’s parents while Wu and Ma have been arrested.
One internet user commented: “Mobile phones more important than children we are seeing more of that.”
Another wrote: “If a parent chooses to do that the children are better off without them.”
