According to Paerangi Haimona, her 15-year-old son Kauri Huriwai-Flavell was ordered to shave his facial hair or stay away from New Zealand’s Rotorua Lakes High School.

Following the school’s demands, the mum approached the board of trustees and asked them to review their grooming policies to be more inclusive.

“It’s not a teacher’s job to try and tell our students how to look,” Haimona argued according to Stuff.

In addition, the mother also insisted that students should be allowed to look and dress as they please because looks have nothing to do with education.

On the other side of the story, the board confirmed that they need to respect the school’s rules and encouraged the mother to appeal to the principal if she wanted the policies to be changed.

“If there is a good reason to change the rule that will be changed, if the consensus of opinion is that it should not be, then it won’t be,” Board Chairman Bill Lawson said.

Welcoming the mother’s suggestion was the school’s principal, Jon Ward, who confirmed to Daily Mail Australia that they were ready to review their policies.

“The board had an opportunity to hear a presentation from Kauri’s mother at yesterday’s board meeting,” he said.

“The board welcomed hearing her perspective and agreed a pathway forwards. This is following a formal process of communicating in writing to the principal, who will then engage in a formal community consultation regarding school rules. All parties were happy with this approach being followed.”
