Kyle Campbell, also 27, is handed a life sentence for murder. They were both sentenced at Leeds Crown Court after the death of 3-year-old Riley Siswick at their home in Huddersfield.

Riley had been found lifeless two days after Campbell injured him by “either from a fist or by jumping or stamping on him or by striking him with an object.”

The blow injured the child’s bowel so severely that he developed infections. Neither Campbell nor Siswick raised an alarm about the child’s deteriorating condition which “would have been obvious” to anyone.

Campbell was imprisoned for life and must serve up to 20 years while Siswick was jailed for 7 years.

The Judge, Mr. Turner, said that by not calling medical services for the boy after Campbell injured him, the two condemned Riley to 36 hours of “unremitting and significant pain.”

He called Campbell’s actions “an appalling act of selfish cruelty which condemned Riley to a slow and painful death and deprived him of any residual chance he had of survival.”

Mr. Turner also said that Campbell’s decision to believe that Riley had a severe stomach bug was a “reckless gamble” that “did not pay off.”

“You were too much of a coward to face up to the consequences of your actions and pretended that nothing had happened,” the judge told him.

“He (Riley) was left to die in a bed soaked in his own urine.”

Mr. Turner, who reduced Siswick’s sentence, said that she had a mental age of 11 as she had a “lack of insight” into her actions. He told her that this “considerably diminished your responsibility.”
