A mother-of-four ended up buying food items from expensive brands after stockpilers emptied the shelves and then realized she didn’t have enough money.
Sophie Gowing went for grocery shopping and was forced to buy items from expensive brands due to stockpiling.
When she was at the supermarket checkout, she didn’t have enough money and couldn’t pay.
That’s when a kind-hearted stranger stepped in to help her.
Sophie told that she usually buys from Tesco but due to the stockpiling, she was forced to buy from Morrisons, Aldershot.
She said her usual budget is £60 but she ended up buying food items worth £82 and then panicked as she didn’t have the money.
Sophie said: “The lady at the till said ‘that’s £82, please’. I thought, what? I turned around and said I think I am going to cry. I was so embarrassed, I had to put £22 worth of food back.”
She was left in tears as she didn’t know which items to put back to make the amount £60. She decided to leave the trolley but a kind-hearted man behind her whispered in her ear: “Don’t worry I’ll pay the rest – will £20 work?’”
A staff member also offered to give her a discount so she could buy the items she had in her trolley.
She said: “Then I had some change and I offered to give it to the man, but he said you keep it for yourself, you need it more. And it really did help me with the rest of the day.”
Sophie said she was left embarrassed and couldn’t ask the kind man’s name but he looked over 60 and told her he had leukaemia two years ago and also told her about his lovely grandchildren.
She said if he hadn’t have given her the money, she would have left with nothing because she was left embarrassed when her total was more than what she had.
Sophie is extremely grateful and wants to say thank you to the stranger if she ever sees him again.
