A mother has broken into tears as she was finally able to hold a child of her own following a successful delivery that took place after multiple miscarriages.
36-year-old Amanda Dourdounis had suffered multiple miscarriages before finally giving birth to a tiny baby on December 16.
According to the reports, Amanda suffers from Antiphospholipid syndrome which results in an increased risk of the development of blood clots and miscarriages during pregnancy.
While the Melbourne-based mum and her husband, Angelo, were thrilled by the fact they finally became parents, they were soon faced with the harsh reality as doctors told them their baby who was born 16 weeks prematurely weighed just under one pound.
Fortunately, living in an incubator at Monash Children’s Hospital proved to be fruitful for the young girl and the hospital staff allowed Amanda to hold her for the first time ever on Christmas Day.
“We felt like that was the beginning of the end of this chapter. She was very ill – everything was bumped up to 100 per cent,” the baby’s father said as he recalled the bittersweet time his daughter was born in a frail condition. “Doctors were shaking their head and apologizing to us.”
In spite of all the odds, however, the baby made it through the ordeal and her condition improved significantly as soon as she rested in her mum’s arms.
“When they placed Amalia on Amanda her oxygen support requirement levels dropped to the lowest they have been,” the father added. “It showed how comfortable she was.”
To support the family during these difficult times, Amanda and Angelo’s families have contributed financially and even started a fundraiser to help them pay for the medical expenses.
