A devastated mother from Florida was left planning two funerals after her 22-year-old daughter and 20-year-old son passed away from coronavirus 11 days apart.
In an interview with NBC Miami, Monete Hicks from Lauderdale Lakes said that her son Byron was the first one to show symptoms of Covid-19 on June 27.
“I came to check on him. He was in the living room on the floor sitting up. He was sleeping, but he was breathing very poorly,” Hicks said.
Byron was taken to a hospital where he later passed away.
Seven days later, her daughter, 22-year-old Mychaela, also developed symptoms of the disease. She fought coronavirus until she had to be hospitalized because of severe headaches and fevers.
Hicks told NBC: “As the days went by, while she was [at the hospital], everything just went to breaking down in her body.”
The 22-year-old lost a kidney and was put on oxygen before she passed away on July 8.
Both Hicks’ children had underlying health conditions. The heartbroken mother said asthma and morbid obesity are listed as contributing causes of her son’s death, and as for her daughter, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, and also obesity, were the contributing causes.
The heartbroken mom said she tries to function normally during the day, “but at night, it really hits me.”
Cases of coronavirus are rising quickly among young adults in many states as restaurants, stores and bars reopened. In Florida alone, people ages 15 to 34 make up 31 percent of total cases.
A teachers union in the state is suing Gov. Ron DeSantis and other officials to halt the ordered full reopening of classrooms.
DeSantis said at a briefing: “Obviously, if you look at the epidemic, it’s more severe in some parts than others, and I think you should recognize that.”
