33-year-old Tanja Ludwig, the mother who jumped from a cliff with her baby girl in her arms, made a distressing post before she committed suicide.
The bodies of the mother and her 2-year-old child Tilly were discovered at the base of a cliff below the tourist spot Robertson Lookout at Mt. Keira.
In one of her Facebook posts, she shared a message for people struggling with mental health issues. She wrote on Facebook: “It’s OK not to be OK. We all need support sometimes.”
Detectives are treating the case as a murder-suicide.
Ludwig had been living in an apartment with her daughter after she and her partner separated.
A relative of Ludwig’s ex-partner told Daily Mail that his family was shocked by what happened. “Think about the person closest to you, and you found them at the bottom of a cliff… it’s beyond horrible,’ he said. “Two beautiful human lives have been ripped away.”
Neighbor Athena Kinnas also said she “couldn’t believe” Ludwig and her child were gone. She said the two would always stop by to say hello. “She was a very friendly lady, very nice person.”
Mrs. Kinnas added: “I feel shaken. When I heard the news last night, I said to my husband ‘poor thing, who did that to her’ and then this morning I found out… I’m gonna miss her.”
She also said that there were no signs Ludwig had been struggling days before her death. “She was a nice person. Each time I talk to her, she was happy.”
Paramedics winched down the cliff to reach the bodies. Speaking about the recovery mission, Wollongong Police district commander Superintendent Chris Craner said: “It’s steep, it’s hectic, we’ve got police coming in from the low side, police trekking down from the high side and the consideration of the helicopter.
“It’s a treacherous, dangerous area we need to get to to respectfully get this people out.”
He added: “It’s going to be absolutely devastating for the community who don’t know these people and hear this and what it’s about.”
