A new mother passed away only days after giving birth to her first child.
30-year-old Kristen McMullen from Florida was forced to deliver her daughter early via an emergency c-section due to pregnancy complications after she contracted the coronavirus.
Her doctors became very concerned when she started experiencing breathing problems, which also saw her unborn baby getting less oxygen in her womb.
McMullen held her baby, Summer Reign, for a few minutes before she was taken to the intensive care unit.
She was photographed giving her daughter a bottle of milk before she was rushed to the ICU, where her condition deteriorated and she developed pneumonia.
The mother was only able to see her daughter through video calls on an iPad.
Her aunt, Melissa Syverson, told Florida Today: “She was able to hold Summer for basically just two pictures.
“One she had the mask on, and one she took the mask off. They took the quick pictures, she put the mask back on — and then they moved Kristen to ICU immediately after that.”
“She couldn’t interact. But at least she could see Summer while she was being cared for and just look at her. And then her breathing just progressively got worse,” she added.
Only days later, McMullen passed away.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with the medical expenses and also for Summer.
“Kristen dreamed of being a mom and after several years of fighting an uphill battle, her and her husband Keith, received the good news that they were expecting. This bundle of joy is the first great grandchild in the family and we couldn’t have been happier for her and her little growing family,” it reads.
“She lit up the room wherever she was, her laughter was contagious and she will be truly missed every day until we all take our last breath. We’re so thankful for the time we had with her and thank God for the blessing of her little girl that she left behind.”
