A 33-year-old mother is one of the eight people who were shot dead by a gunman at three different massage parlors in Georgia on Tuesday.
Delaina Ashley Yaun was reportedly waiting for a couple’s treatment with her husband when she was shot by 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long.
The suspect told police that he was a sex addict and he viewed the massage parlors as ‘outlets’ for his dilemma.
Daoyou Feng, 44, Xiaojie Yan, 49, and Paul Andre Michels, 54, were among the victims.
The shootings were initially feared to have been driven by racism as most of the victims were Asian women. However, police officers clarified that the gunman said that wasn’t what motivated him.
Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Captain Jay Baker said in a statement: “Long told investigators the crimes were not racially motivated. Long told investigators that he blames the massage parlors for providing an outlet for his addiction to sex.”
Yaun, a mother-of-two, was in Young’s Asian Massage parlor with her husband when Long opened fire. She died at the scene but her husband managed to escape without injuries.
It is not clear if any of the other people who were killed were staff or customers. In addition to the 33-year-old mother, a white man was shot dead along with six Asian women.
Captain Jay Baker of the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office said at a press conference on Wednesday: “He claims that it was not racially motivated… he has an issue that he considers a sex addiction and sees these locations as something that allows him to go to these places… it’s a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate.”
Baker also said that it had been a “very bad day” for Long, adding: “He was at the end of his rope.”
