Kathleen Thorson from Oregon passed away from a brain hemorrhage only five days after giving birth to her fourth child.
Her dying wish was to save lives by donating her organs.
The mother-of-four gave birth to baby Theodore on December 29. But after five days, she suffered a severe brain bleed and was rushed to a hospital.
Sadly, she was declared brain dead despite several surgeries.
But her family decided to turn the tragedy into a blessing for 12 people after the mother donated 12 organs, including her lungs and heart, to people in need.
Richard Stubbs, who set up a GoFundMe page for the family, wrote: “Kathleen’s condition deteriorated to a point that she could no longer survive.
“As was her wish, we are doing everything we can for her to be the prayed-for miracle of life for certain others in need of organ donations.”
Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a serious condition that causes brain tissue to bleed. High blood pressure is the most common cause but others also include the use of blood thinners, spontaneous rupture of a blood vessel, and head trauma.
Signs of ICH include weakness or tingling sensation on one side of the body, slurring, loss of balance, and severe headaches.
1 in 100 women experience postpartum hemorrhaging and it is more likely to happen after a c-section.
According to a study by the American Academy of Neurology, the risk for ICH in pregnant women is highest during the third trimester and also during the postpartum period.
“The nurse told Jesse the chances that someone is a candidate of this magnitude is less than [one] in a million,” Stubbs added. “But anyone who knew Kathleen already knew that.”
