30-year-old Daisy Rogers from El Paso, Texas was boating with her boyfriend and their children in Lake Tahoe near Zephyr Cove when she plunged into the water, said El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

Rogers was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident and her body immediately went into shock from the cold temperature.

Her partner jumped into the water to try to save her but the boat holding their children drifted away from the shore.

Rescue teams were called to the scene around 7pm after people heard the children shouting for help. They managed to pull the boyfriend from the cold lake after he had been in the water for more than an hour.

However, Rogers was found after 9pm and she was rushed to Barton Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Eric Guevin, a fire marshal with the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, said the older ones on the boat moved the children below the deck to stay warm.

“The life jacket saved that gentleman’s life; that’s the biggest message we can give,” he added. “He was not coordinated enough and he didn’t have the muscle strength because of that cold water. He was totally reliant on that vest to keep him afloat.”
