A mother has tragically passed away after charging into the sea to save her drowning children from a rip current that started pulling them away from the shore.
The incident occurred at a beach in North Wildwood, New Jersey, where a 49-year-old mother from Wernersville, Pennsylvania, was enjoying her time off together with her children.
As the mother was relaxing at the beach, she noticed her two sons, aged 8 and 10, and her daughter, 19, struggling to stay above the water after getting pulled further into the sea by a rip current.
“The mother was calling out to them to come back and when she saw they were having trouble, she jumped into the water,” Fire Chief Dominick J. McClain explained in an interview with NJ.com.
According to the reports, the woman was able to save both of her sons before returning in an attempt to get her daughter to safety.
As the authorities have confirmed, emergency responders eventually reached the 19-year-old and her mother and pulled them out of the sea.
“Crew quickly removed the victim from the water via a rescue board. Upon exiting the water NWFD and NWBP personnel immediately initiated live-saving measures on the unconscious victim,” the statement said.
As CBS Philly reported, the mother’s husband and their other two children were staying at a nearby hotel at the time of the tragic incident.
After the 49-year-old mother was rushed to Cape Regional Medical Center, she was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, her children were taken for evaluation. They are expected to make a full recovery.
“That’s the way life works unfortunately and since the kids were saved, that’s wonderful, but it’s unfortunate the mother has had to pass,” one of the witnesses of the tragic accident, Jonathan Selepak, said in an interview with CBS Philly.
