A man has been hailed a hero after he worked for free so a cancer-stricken teen can spend Christmas at home.

Since he was diagnosed with a rare type of bone cancer, 15-year-old Charlie Smith has been in and out of the hospital.

A tennis ball-shaped lump was found near his ribs and when he went to A&E, it was discovered that it was Ewing’s sarcoma – a rare type of bone cancer.

He would miss out on spending Christmas with his family at home if his bedroom could not be transformed into a sterile germ-free environment where he could receive treatment.

His parents, 30-year-old Ben and 35-year-old Sam needed someone to place a new washable floor in a few days before Charlie’s medical kit and special NHS bed arrived.

When 43-year-old Brent Penniston found out, he agreed with the £494 job and worked on it while the family were still in the hospital.

But when the invoice finally arrived, it showed £0 with a heartwarming message: “We hope Charlie makes a full recovery and your family have a happy Christmas.”

The family said Brent is a true Christmas hero.

“I was absolutely gobsmacked and just burst out crying,” Sam expressed. “It was such a nice thing to do and he did it out of the goodness of his heart.

“He had packed up his things and left the house without asking for any money.”

She added: “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the invoice. It means the world to me and without him we wouldn’t have had the floor at all.

“He came to us when we needed help and we don’t know what we would have done without him.”

Speaking about his actions, father-of-two Brent said: “It’s Christmas time, the time for giving, and it is the least I could do.

“I’d do it again at the drop of a hat. It could quite easily have been my son, so it really hit home for me.”
