A baby boy passed away in ‘horror and pain’ after suffering from sexual abuse at the hands of his own mother and her partner, according to prosecutors.
Little Hoss Wayne Benham had 89 injuries across his body when he was taken to a hospital in Alabama.
Crystal Ballenger, the child’s mother, and her boyfriend, Jeffrey Hugh Brown, first claimed he had passed away in the bathtub. But an autopsy revealed the baby had 38 injuries to his neck and head inflicted by blunt-force trauma.
It was also discovered he had four injuries to each eye, six on his torso, 19 across his legs and arms, and seven to his anus and genitalia.
The young boy, who deserved love and care, passed away on his first birthday.
Brown and Ballenger both face charges of sexual torture and capital murder. They could receive life in prison or death penalty if convicted.
After the child’s death, both reportedly tested positive for drugs.
Prosecutor Wilson Blaylock said: “It’s really unbelievable and just hard to read what happened to this infant child.
“His last 36 hours were spent in horror and pain.”
A woman who identifies herself as the boy’s great grandmother wrote: “He was my first great grand son and I miss him every single day and he is always on my mind.
“I look to heaven every night and tell him goodnight, because I know he is in heaven and he watches over us all.
“I Love You and miss you and I miss that beautiful smile that was always on your face.
“From your great nana.”
