30-year-old Roxanne Davis and her former 24-year-old boyfriend Samuel Davies have been jailed for 10 years each after getting convicted of causing “horrific injuries” to Roxanne’s baby, Stanley, who died in agony at the age of 24 days.

During the trial, the judge accused the couple of treating their child “as little more than a fashion accessory” and explained that Stanley “was in pain for much of his short life.”

While it isn’t clear who inflicted the fatal injuries, both defendants were tested positive for marijuana and cocaine.

Speaking at the Winchester Crown Court, Roxanne turned against her ex-boyfriend and accused him of killing her baby. “You murdered my baby,” she told him during the sentencing.

According to her, Stanley “was passed around like a parcel” by her ex and his family. In an attempt to defend herself from consequences, Roxanne also added that she was “over the moon” when she gave birth to Stanley and that she felt as if she “had my whole world in my hands.”

Samuel, on the other hand, told the jurors that his ex-girlfriend was “jealous” after giving birth to Stanley because she wasn’t the center of the attention anymore.

Defending Samuel, Sally Howes QC explained that he wasn’t the biological father and claimed that he is experiencing “a great sadness and a great feeling of guilt.”

As the defendant added, “he is clearly a very immature man and his diagnoses of ADHD and emotionally unstable personality disorder are recent and will have to be addressed at a later stage.”

The defendant of Roxanne, Katie Thorne QC, on the other hand, argued that the mother was suffering from depression and added that: “Miss Davis’ case has always been that she didn’t cause the injuries. Miss Davis did accept her strong feelings of guilt in failing to protect Stanley.”

Prosecutor James Newton-Price QC, however, said that the evidence, including multiple bodily injuries, is convincing enough to assume that both the mother and her boyfriend disregarded the welfare of Stanley.

“This is a high culpability case. It features multiple incidents of injuries, using force and disregard for the welfare of the victim. The suffering was prolonged and there were escalating injuries, with bones broken and re-broken.

“The Crown would say they were warned very clearly about the risk of harm to Stanley by the police and a social worker. They were warned they could not behave in an aggressive or argumentative way,” the prosecutor said.

Dismissing the mother’s “crocodile tears,” the judge sentenced Roxanne and Samuel to 10 years in prison each.
