10-year-old Wilton Obregón hit the headlines after he was found begging a Border Patrol officer for help after finding himself all alone in Texas after crossing the border with Mexico.

As La Prensa revealed, the young boy and his mom, Meylin Obregón, left Nicaragua together to escape the woman’s abusive husband and try to secure a better future in the States.

Back in March, the mother and son illegally crossed the US-Mexico border only to find themselves kicked out of the country after getting caught by the Border Patrol.

While the mother’s two ‘unaccompanied’ nephews, who are both 15 years old, were allowed to stay in the country, Meylin and Wilton were sent back to Mexico where they were kidnapped shortly after their arrival.

Eventually, the kidnappers released the 10-year-old after his uncle, Misael Obregón, who is the father of the two teens who arrived in the States together with Meylin, paid a ransom.

As the man revealed, he managed to collect enough money to pay off the kidnappers with the help of his friends. He, however, could not secure an additional $5,000 the kidnappers demanded to release his sister.

“Well, the truth is, I got a part of the money with friends. I got a part of the money to free my nephew and thank God they released him. But I don’t have the money for her. It’s kind of ugly. I hardly sleep,” Misael said.

After Wilton’s release, the young boy joined a group of migrants and managed to enter the States once again. Once in Texas, however, the 10-year-old was found wandering around all alone.

Following the incident, the Nicaraguan government reached out to the United States and Mexico in an attempt to find Wilton’s mother and come up with a solution for the family’s situation.

While Nicaragua Vice President Rosario Murrillo insisted the authorities were working on reuniting Wilton with his biological father, Lazaro Gutiérrez, Misael Obregón opposed the idea saying his nephew would end up back in the arms of an “irresponsible and abusive father.”
