49-year-old Susan Smith has spent over 26 years in prison for drowning 14-month-old Alex and 3-year-old Michael because the man she was having an affair with told her he did not want children.

Smith will be eligible for parole in 2024.

A source said that the woman understands that the infractions over the past twenty years would work against her.

“She’s behaving herself these days,” the source told the magazine. “She knows that her parole date is four years away and she can’t get parole if she isn’t being good.”

Smith’s children disappeared on October 25, 1994. She reportedly told police that a black man kidnapped her kids during a carjacking as she broke down in tears on national television.

However, she later admitted that she had locked her young children in her car and let the vehicle get swallowed by a lake.

Even though she was sentenced to life behind bars, she still kept on getting herself in trouble.

In 2000, Smith was disciplined for having sex with a prison guard who was later imprisoned for a few months. She confessed to their numerous sexual encounters after she tested positive for STI.

A prison captain also admitted to having sex with the woman and was sentenced to five years probation.

In addition, Smith was caught with narcotics and marijuana.

In a 2015 interview, Smith said she wanted to kill herself, not her children. “I had planned to kill myself first and leave a note behind telling what had happened,” she said. “I didn’t believe I could face my family when the truth was revealed.”

She also wrote to The State’s Harrison Cahill, saying: “I am not the monster society thinks I am. I am far from it.”
