A 24-year-old mother and her baby tragically died after a street racer hit them at 100mph in Tampa, Florida.
21-year-old Cameron Herrin pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide before his sentencing on Thursday.
According to reports, he was racing with his friend down a boulevard and his Mustang hit 100mph before the fatal crash.
It was in May 2018 when Herrin, who was 18 at that time, hit Jessica Reisinger-Raubenolt and one-year-old Lillia.
He was driving a Ford Mustang while his friend was driving a gold Nissan. They were on their way to a gym in Tampa when their cars sped off alongside one another.
Reisinger-Raubenolt was pushing her baby in a stroller when the two speeding vehicles suddenly approached. The gold Nissan swerved away to avoid the family but Herrin stirred away from his friend’s car, hitting the mother and her child.
Herrin appeared to be wide-eyed when he was handed a 24-year prison sentence on Thursday.
His mother, Cheryl, said: “I feel responsible for this accident. If I could, I would step in front of Cameron, and I would accept the punishment you might render.”
She also talked about the suffering of her son Cameron and his brother, Tristan, who was a passenger in the vehicle during the crash. “I’ll hear screams at night from both boys. They have anxiety attacks and panic attacks.”
The grieving family of the victim wanted him to face the maximum 30-year sentence.
David Reubenolt, the father of the baby girl, told Herrin: “I want you to never forget that you have caused thousands of people to cry.”
.After the sentencing, Raubenolt said: “She was the type of person who never wanted to see any person suffer and this would have been a very hard day for her to sit in and through.
“But ultimately if she knew our goal was to make these streets safer, being the humble person that she was she would accept her sacrifice and be grateful for it.”
