A 57-year-old mother and her son were arrested last Sunday after they were seen making their way through the gallery in the Senate during the riot in the Capitol.
Officers in Tennessee confirmed that they had taken Lisa Eisenhart and her son, Eric Munchel, 30, into custody.
Photos of the mother and her son went viral after it was reported that the two had brought a stash of plastic cuffs to the riot.
A video shows the duo holding the flex cuss as they tried to chase two police officers trying to run away from the mob.
The mother was charged with entering a restricted area without lawful authority and conspiracy.
During the protests, she told a newspaper: “The left has everything: the media, organizations, the government. We have to organize if we’re going to fight back and be heard.
She added: “This country was founded on revolution. If they’re going to take every legitimate means from us, and we can’t even express ourselves on the internet, we won’t even be able to speak freely, what is America for?
“I’d rather die as a 57-year-old woman than live under oppression. I’d rather die and would rather fight.”
Eisenhart and Munchel traveled from Nashville, Tennessee to attend the protest.
In an interview with The Tennessean, Eisenhart said: “We saw the zip cuffs on top of an already opened cabinet in the hallway inside the Capitol building.
“We picked them up to prevent them falling into hands of bad actors.”
Photos show the mother and son holding the zip ties as they chased two officers who were trying to run away from them.
“We wanted to show that we’re willing to rise up, band together and fight if necessary. Same as our forefathers, who established this country in 1776. It was a kind of flexing of muscles,” Munchel told The Times of London.
An official told the Washington Post: “We’re not looking at this as a grand conspiracy, but we are interested in learning what people would do with things like zip ties.”
