A 32-year-old mother has been arrested after she left her 4-year-old daughter on a street in New York City.
The young girl named Sidaya was picked up by police officers at the corner of East 156 Street and Prospect Avenue in the Bronx.
Sidaya was placed in the care of New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services as NYPD officers searched for her relatives.
Sadeekah Abdul Salaam reportedly left the child alone on a Bronx street as she went to a homeless shelter to find a place to stay.
Surveillance footage shows Sidaya walking behind her mother. At one point, the mother looked back to see if her daughter managed to catch up with her before they both disappeared from the frame.
LAPD officers picked up the child and took her to NYC Health + Hospitals / Lincoln where tests showed that she is in good condition. She is now in the care of New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services.
Days after the girl was found, police identified Salaam as the mother.
The 32-year-old was arrested and charged with abandonment of a child, reckless endangerment, and acting in a manner injurious to a child, the New York Daily News reported.
Salaam is currently awaiting arraignment in a criminal court in the Bronx.
One person commented: “This is too sad and bad, poor little girl. People shouldn’t have kids if they aren’t emotional and financially ready for them.”
Another wrote: “she is very sweet but lost looking, no wonder, some children’s fate is unbearable sad, each child should be in our focus, each child should be loved by us like it is our own, that would create a wonderful environment of love and care.”
A third added: “Hoping this mother gets some help. She is clearly hurting very much. In better circumstances, she would be a different mother.”
