A 58-year-old mother has been arrested after she told her daughter that she had been shot and police officers rushed to her home.
Arnthia Willis, who just wanted to make an April Fool’s Day joke, was arrested on suspicion of an unlawful request for emergency service assistance.
After she called her daughter to say that she had been shot, her worried daughter immediately called 911, according to The Wichita Eagle.
Wichita police Lt. Ronald Hunt said: “Multiple police units, probably between 15-20 officers from the Wichita Police Department as well as fire department and EMS responded to the scene.”
Multiple police units surrounded the mother’s home and blocked the streets to investigate.
Cops wearing shields then broke down the door when no one responded, Lt. Hunt said. They discovered that the mother was still at work and she just pranked her daughter.
“I got a call from my mom and she was like ‘he shot me, he shot me’. I was doing like 100 on the highway,” Willis’ daughter told kake.com.
“I’m still shook. They take it seriously and this is on you mom.”
One officer can be heard telling his colleagues: “She’s fine, she said it was an April Fools’ joke.”
The mother was arrested on Thursday in Derby.
“April Fools´ can be a good, funny little joke in some circumstances” but when it causes a police response “it´s not funny anymore,” he added.
One person commented: “And when she called her daughter from jail and asked her to bring bail money, the daughter probably said ‘I’m not falling for another one of your pranks!’”
Another wrote: “Not funny. Should reimburse taxpayers for all costs associated with that stunt. Also, daughter will now likely need therapy. Pretending you’ve won the lottery is a fun April Fool’s prank, but pretending you have been shot is sadistic.”
A third added: “Some people’s idea of a ‘prank’ is seriously warped!”
