A 35-year-old mother from Minnesota has been charged with killing her disabled daughter while her husband was away on a fishing trip.
Elise Nelson allegedly turned off the alarm on her 13-year-old daughter’s emergency medical device and deprived her of life-saving care.
Her daughter, Kylie Larson, had several medical conditions, including developmental delay, respiratory failure, and cerebral palsy.
According to police, Nelson tampered with her daughter’s medical device and let her die.
The mother was the only person with Kylie when she passed away on June 21 as her other daughter was staying with a friend.
Officers allege that Nelson tampered with Kylie’s pulse oximeter device that monitored her pulse rate and oxygen level, and turned off its alarm before turning the device off.
Reports say that the 35-year-old mother altered the device so the alarm wouldn’t make a sound when Kylie’s pulse and oxygen levels dropped below 90 percent.
The next day, Nelson allegedly changed the level from 74 percent to 90 before turning everything off, the data from the device revealed.
The criminal complaint says that when her friend wanted to drop off her other child, they couldn’t get hold of Nelson.
Hours later, the mother texted her family friend and said that she had been giving Kylie CPR and was waiting for paramedics to arrive.
However, Nelson did not call an ambulance for another 20 minutes after sending the message to her friend, authorities said.
The mother reportedly told officers that her daughter had flatlined after her oxygen levels dropped to 86 percent.
An autopsy showed that the teen passed away as a result of both her medical conditions and being deprived of life-saving care.
Nelson was charged with second-degree intentional murder and manslaughter and is being held on $350,000 bail with conditions or $500,000 without conditions.
