A mother has lashed out at a police officer after he fined her $115 for pulling over in a commercial zone to breastfeed her hungry baby.
According to the New York mom, 30-year-old Guillermina Rodriguez, she pulled over on a busy midtown Manhattan street to feed her 3-week-old daughter.
As Rodriguez explained, her baby was crying in the backseat because of hunger. Seeing this caused her to pull over in the commercial zone.
While the mother was in the middle of breastfeeding, she was approached by an NYPD traffic officer who told her she wasn’t allowed to park in the area and fined her $115.
Shocked by the incident, Rodriguez picked up her mobile phone and started recording the officer as he was walking away.
Speaking in front of the camera, the mother slammed the officer for being ‘insensitive’ and not letting her finish the feeding in peace.
“I’m here, breastfeeding my child, and he still gave me a ticket,” she said. “Yep, breastfeeding my baby and he still gave me a ticket. Very nice!”
After the recording went viral, plenty of people rallied to show support for the mother and applauded her for confronting the officer.
Others, however, pointed out that she was rightfully penalized because “breastfeeding isn’t an emergency” and can wait until a person can park lawfully.
“She wasn’t ticketed for breastfeeding, she was ticketed for being pulled over in a commercial zone. It will do not good for people to be in an uproar about this, as she was in the wrong. Could the officer have been given a pass? Yes, but then they would have been wrong for that. There is no win here,” one person wrote.
“We have lost our humanity,” another one argued.
Someone suggested: “Or pull over in a safe and legal area. I’ve breastfed two children. I’ve always been able to pull into a parking lot before doing so.”
