A mother-of-four has had to have both her hands amputated after getting bitten by their family dog.
41-year-old Michelle Ellis was taken to Derriford Hospital where she was put in an induced coma after the small bite developed into sepsis.
Michelle was put on a dialysis machine and she underwent surgery.
In an interview with Plymouth Live, her daughter, 24-year-old Keana, said that her mother was not worried about the wound because it was very small.
However, she started experiencing ‘flu-like’ symptoms a few days later and she was rushed to the hospital.
“She tried to put him in his cage and he bit her, but it was a tiny bite – around the size of a cigarette burn – so nothing was thought of it and she left it, and then this happened,” Keana shared.
Her family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise enough money for expenses and rehabilitation costs.
“The fundraiser is to help pay for her rehabilitation and any costs that will come along with that – but also just for her to be able to have a little treat when she starts getting better,” Keana said.
“Hopefully it will be a nice treat for her, and it will mean she won’t have any extra worries. Hopefully, she won’t have to worry about money for a little bit.”
She further said: “The dog is going to be put down, but it is actually the family dog – he’s always been a little bit funny, but I think something was going on, she tried to put him in his cage and he bit her, but it was a tiny bite – around the size of a cigarette burn – so nothing was thought of it and she left it, and then this happened.
”
Writing on the fundraiser, Michelle’s sister said: “At this point in time she’s been two weeks in intensive care fighting for her life, her kidneys are not working but her liver is improving.
“Sadly, Michelle has suffered damage to her hands due to lack of blood and oxygen to them. We were informed that all her fingers will be amputated.
“It will be a very long road to recovery, but I’m optimistic she can fight this and bloom to full health.”
