A woman abandoned her four-month-old daughter after the baby tested positive for coronavirus.
The mother left her daughter at a hospital as the child tested positive for COVID-19. According to some reports, the woman abandoned the infant in a hospital in Palermo, Sicily on October 12.
La Republicca reported that the mother dropped the baby off to hospital and said she was the child’s aunt. No one at the facility has heard from the mother since.
Dr. Marilu Furnari of the Di Cristina hospital’s health department said to local media that the hospital tried to contact the girl’s mother.
“But we could not locate her. At that time we alerted the police to the possible abandonment of the girl,” Dr. Furnari said.
A few days later, another woman claiming to be the baby’s aunt arrived and tried to take the child home. However, medical staff become suspicious and immediately called the police.
The second woman was forced to remain at the hospital as she tested positive for coronavirus.
She then managed to escape five days later.
Authorities are now investigating the incident and measures have been taken to keep the baby safe. Police are reviewing CCTV footage of the hospital and have asked witnesses to find the mother.
As of this writing, there are more than 543,000 coronavirus cases in Italy, with more than 37,400 fatalities.
