A mortuary worker was caught on camera robbing a 60-year-old man’s home hours after he died.
49-year-old Sammy Williecarl Gates has been charged with burglary after he was caught on surveillance camera stealing items from the elderly man’s house.
According to reports, he pleaded not guilty to the burglary charge and another charge of possession of a firearm.
When police first went to the Spring Valley home on August 31 for a welfare check, they discovered the body of the elderly man who passed away from natural causes.
The body was taken to a mortuary by an independent mortuary service.
But two days later, the man’s family called the police to report that a firearm and a safe were missing from the house.
After reviewing the CCTV footage, the family called police again to report that they believed there had been a burglary.
The Ring footage showed that on August 31, a man arrived at the house around 11 pm with a utility vehicle. He entered the house twice and came out with packed bags and a packed body bag.
He was later identified as Gates, the owner of Mortuary Transportation Services. However, this was not the mortuary service company that the police called to transport the elderly man’s body.
Gates was arrested after detectives served a search warrant and found the missing firearm and safe in his home.
Officers also found two additional safes, 16 firearms, watches, jewelry, personal identifying documents, and more. Gates allegedly robbed homes of other deceased people before the August 31 burglary.
