A 72-year-old man has died after his pet monkey bit him hard while trying to teach the animal how to collect coconuts from trees.
The elderly man, Ngah Muhammad, suffered severe blood loss as an artery was damaged from the bite.
His son was also attacked by the pet monkey, which occurred in the north-west of Malaysia.
The two had taken the animal to a ‘monkey school’ and trained it to climb trees. According to neighbors, the monkey was well-trained and the family wanted the animal to learn other tasks, such as take fruits from trees.
The coconut trees were located behind their house. When the elderly man’s son, Mohd Zakaria Ngah, noticed that there were no sounds in a while, he decided to check their backyard.
The son was shocked to see his father lying on the floor with a large wound to his wrist. At first, he didn’t realize that it was the monkey that had caused the injury. But when he went over to his father, their pet monkey also attacked him and bit him on his neck.
His scream alerted their neighbors who immediately came to rescue him.
Mohd said to local media that their family had purchased the money when it was young.
“I was at home when it happened. After some time had passed, I found it weird because it was quiet. I did not hear my dad, there was no sound of coconuts falling and there was no sound from the monkey,” he said.
“When I arrived at the scene, I was shocked to find my father lying cold on the ground, not moving, and not far from the monkey, with his right hand bleeding.”
The Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia arrived at the scene and captured the monkey.
