Person Washed A Large Amount Of Money In Washing Machine Due To Coronavirus Fears


A person from South Korea reportedly suffered a considerable financial loss after attempting to wash condolence money they received from family and friends in a washing machine due to coronavirus fears.

The incident occurred somewhere in Ansan, South Korea, where a person afraid of contracting coronavirus washed an undisclosed amount of money in a washing machine.

Following the unusual money disinfection attempt, some of the 50,000-won ($42) bills were severely damaged whereas others got shredded into tiny pieces.

According to a bank official named Seo Jee Woun, the person, identified only by family name Eom, contacted Bank of Korea and requested to have the damaged bills exchanged for new ones.

As Woun confirmed in a statement following the incident, the bank was able to exchange a total of 507 50k-won bills at half value and provided the person with over $19k worth of new currency.

The rest of the money, however, was too damaged for the bank to accept it. While it is not clear how much money the person washed in total, Woun confirmed that the loss was “considerable.”

Though the bank refused to release additional information about Eom due to privacy laws, they confirmed the unfortunate person received the money from family and friends during the funeral of a relative.

Previously, another South Korean who goes by the surname of Kim, attempted to destroy potential traces of coronavirus by heating their money up in a microwave.

As seen in the photo of the aftermath, some of the bills got burned severely during their imposed quarantine in the microwave.

As Woun explained, they provided Kim with more than $4,300 worth of new bills after the incident.
