They’re always ready to play, run, jump, and talk. They interrupt conversations with little regard to whether they’re being rude. Their ongoing enthusiasm makes them both loveable and exhausting.

One parent, a certified Life Coach and Professional Speaker who calls herself “Mom Coach Kirsten,” has some tips for parents dealing with energetic children who love to interrupt.

In this video, she addressing a common issue many parents face—when a child interrupts conversations.

Kirsten is talking to someone when her son runs up to her yelling, “Mom!” When she tries to finish her conversation before pausing, her son continues to interrupt by saying, “Mom!”

In contrast to this scenario, she shows her technique at work. Instead of yelling, her son runs up to her and places his hand on her shoulder. He waits quietly until she is ready to listen.

She outlines four steps that are easy enough for even young children to master in just a few days.

Step 1: Have your child place their hand somewhere on you where you can see it, like your shoulder.

Step 2: Place your hand on theirs to acknowledge that they want your attention.

Step 3: When ready, you can politely excuse yourself from the conversation.

Step 4: Turn to your child, thank them for waiting, remove their hand, and listen to them with your full attention.

This strategy focuses on cultivating good manners than can also boost a child’s self-confidence when communicating with others.
