Regardless you like it or not, bearing a child, delivering a child, and caring a child until he or she is ready to start his or her own journey is an inevitable sacrifice for a mother.
In rare cases, a routine procedure of delivering a baby turns out to be an unfortunate accident.
Karisa Bugal from Colorado was pregnant with a baby boy. It was supposed to be a normal process until Karisa’s C-section took an unexpected turn. Doctors found that Karisa had a rare case that affected one in 100 thousand deliveries.

Karisa had an amniotic fluid embolism. It makes the fluids surrounding the baby get into the mother’s bloodstream. when the fluids get into the mother’s bloodstream, all of the organs shut down. There is no medical treatment found to prevent it yet and many mothers do not survive.
Dr. Kelly Gerow, who was in charge of the delivery of Karisa’s son, noticed dropping heart rate of the baby. The baby’s life and mother’s life were at risk.
At that moment, Karisa had to choose between two procedures: a cesarean with anesthesia, which could save the baby but lose her, or a cesarean where she was awake, which could save her but lose the baby.
She made a fast decision: a cesarean with anesthesia. And this decision became her last decision in her life.

Dr. Gerow said, “Her other option would have been to stay awake for her surgery, but by the time we would have put in a spinal tap or something it’s possible [her son] Declan would not have made it.”
Karisa asked the last question how much Declan weighed.
“How do I explain to him that his mom is gone giving birth to him? I think about that all the time. How do I explain when he asks ‘Where’s Mommy?’” said her husband Wes Bugal.
Karisa passed away and saved her baby. Declan doesn’t have any chance to meet his mother but we can hope he realizes someday that his mother is a hero.
