A non-binary model has gone viral for their perfect response after they received a series of hateful messages from a parent who was concerned about their child’s gender identity.

Rain Dove, a non-binary model, has a unique policy of responding with kindness to the people who message them on Instagram, even if some of the messages initially lack it or are rude enough to be ignored.

Rain Dove calls himself a “gender capitalist.point 215 |

” A gender capitalist is a person who understands that there are certain advantages and disadvantages to being particular sex or gender and, thus, capitalizes on that theory.point 153 | Gender capitalism, though still a rather new concept in mainstream society, has already received backlash by those who believe gender is binary.point 276 |

As someone who is open, out, and proud on social media, as you would expect, Dove receives quite a lot of backlash themselves for their gender identity.point 126 | 1

The now-viral text exchange that ensued shows that all people can change their mind-sets and be more accepting if only they were just a little empathetic.point 129 | This time, the message was from a parent who was angry and confused that their child had asked for a binder, an article of clothing used to flatten one’s chest.point 262 |

Dove stayed calm, prompted the parent about their reasons for feeling that way, and managed to turn it into a teaching moment.point 105 | 1

The conversation began when the mother sent Dove a direct message on Instagram. She stated, “My child is sick due to you.” Dove, having received so many messages like hers, responded with a curt rhetorical question. “Oh no! Did I give them the flu?” they asked. The mother went on to explain that her child wished to transition from being a girl to a boy, all while using incorrect pronouns and misgendering him.

She added that her son wanted to receive a “strap thing for [his] chest” — a binder — for Christmas.point 212 |

A binder is a compression undergarment that looks similar to a t-shirt made of spandex used to bind the breasts to the body, creating a flatter chest.point 124 | This process can be rather daunting for those who are unfamiliar with it, but it is safe—if done correctly and with the appropriate tools.point 241 | 1

Dove makes a strong point that binding with whatever materials you can get your hands on instead of a professionally made article of clothing is dangerous, and suffering alone with mental health issues that you feel like you can’t tell your parents about is also dangerous. Amazingly, Dove’s posts show that sometimes anger can be hiding worry about something deeper, and a little bit of compassion can encourage people to see things in a different way.
