Senator Mitt Romney Receives Courage Award After Voting To Impeach Donald Trump During His First Trial

Senator Mitt Romney has been granted an award for courage after voting to impeach former President Donald Trump during his first trial.

The Utah Senator made history in January 2020 after becoming the first and only Republican member of the Senate to vote to impeach Trump over his Ukraine dealings.

After finding Trump guilty of an impeachment article, Romney faced great backlash from his own party and the former president.

“I sleep well because I know that I did what my conscience told me was the right thing to do,” the senator expressed in an interview with NBC’s Peter Alexander on Friday.

Now, more than a year after casting his divisive vote, Romney has been awarded the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for daring to stand up to his party and the 45th US president.

The award, which was brought to life by late President John F. Kennedy’s family, aims to recognize public figures who dare to put their position and career at risk in order to stand up for the greater good.

Speaking of the award, Romney told NBC’s Today Show that he feels “very appreciative” and “humbled” by the honor at the same time.

“I’m humbled by the Kennedy family’s recognition today. But I see courage every week from my colleagues in the Senate, many of whom make tough decisions to do what they believe is right even though it may be politically unpopular,” he added in a tweet shortly after receiving the award.
