Mitch McConnell is reportedly supporting impeachment efforts whereas he believes that the act will help end Trumpism in the GOP.
According to a New York Times report, the Senate Majority Leader, who defended the President during his first impeachment, now believes that the president committed impeachable offenses.
While Trump recently called the efforts to impeach him a “witch hunt,” McConnell appears to be distancing himself from the President as days pass by.point 468 |
While the Republican didn’t say whether he would vote to impeach Trump or not, he reportedly wanted to see the article of impeachment.point 114 | 1
In addition to turning on his longtime ally, McConnell allegedly hasn’t spoken to the President since the insurrection and has no plans for doing so in the future.
Meanwhile, Rep. Liz Cheney, who holds the third-highest position among Republicans in the House, revealed she will vote to impeach the President.
“On January 6, 2021 a violent mob attacked the United States Capitol to obstruct the process of our democracy and stop the counting of presidential electoral votes. This insurrection caused injury, death and destruction in the most sacred space in our Republic,” Cheney wrote.
“Much more will become clear in coming days and weeks, but what we know now is enough. The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack.
“Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the President. The President could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not.
“There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.”
Concluding, Cheney vowed to “vote to impeach the President.”
According to the reports, House Republican leaders have agreed not to pressure their members to vote against Trump’s impeachment.
