Missouri has sued China for “lying to the world” about the coronavirus pandemic and causing “enormous death, suffering, and economic losses.
”
As the increasing pressure on China over its handling of the pandemic is becoming more and more evident, Missouri has blamed the Chinese government for the devastating outcome in a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for Eastern Missouri.
“The Chinese government lied to the world about the danger and contagious nature of COVID-19, silenced whistleblowers, and did little to stop the spread of the disease. They must be held accountable for their actions,” the office of Missouri Attorney General Eric S. Schmitt wrote in a statement.
According to the reports, the lawsuit represents the first time a U.S. state has sued the People’s Republic of China over coronavirus pandemic concerns.
“In this case, the State of Missouri seeks recovery for the enormous loss of life, human suffering, and economic turmoil experienced by all Missourians from the COVID-19 pandemic that has disrupted the entire world,” an introductory part of the lawsuit, which was uploaded online, in full copy, by Fox News, reads.
“An appalling campaign of deceit, concealment, misfeasance, and inaction by Chinese authorities unleashed this pandemic.
During the critical weeks of the initial outbreak, Chinese authorities deceived the public, suppressed crucial information, arrested whistleblowers, denied human-to-human transmission in the face of mounting evidence, destroyed critical medical research, permitted millions of people to be exposed to the virus, and even hoarded personal protective equipment — thus causing a global pandemic that was unnecessary and preventable.
“Defendants are responsible for the enormous death, suffering, and economic losses they inflicted on the world, including Missourians, and they should be held accountable.”
In a recent turn of events, several world leaders, including the French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, have expressed their discontent with the way China handled the outbreak.
In another lawsuit, thousands of claimants from dozens of countries have sued the Chinese government for negligence in managing the coronavirus outbreak and its alleged cover-up.
The class-action lawsuit, in which China has been sued for $6 trillion, was filed last month in Florida by Berman Law Group and included thousands of claimants from 40 countries, including the US and the UK, according to the reports.
In the lawsuit, the Chinese Communist Party is accused of negligence in handling the coronavirus outbreak and failing to disclose vital information with the rest of the world.
As the chief strategist behind the lawsuit, Jeremy Alters, argued, the Chinese government “have unleashed hell on our communities” by hiding the truth about the epidemic.
“This lawsuit is based on the fact that they knew about this virus. They failed to contain the virus. They failed to let us know in a timely fashion about the virus and have unleashed hell on our communities, on our countries, the United States, Australia and everywhere else,” Alters said in Channel 9’s 60 Minutes.
“That money is not just governments losing money, that is people losing their jobs, that is people losing their homes, that is people losing their livelihoods, that is people being able to feed their children. That six trillion dollars isn’t coming back.”
