Kellie Chauvin’s lawyer told the media that she has been devastated by the death of Floyd and said she completely sympathizes with his remaining family. The couple did not have any children from this marriage, but Kellie had children from a previous relationship.

The Daily Mail reported that Kellie was a former Mrs. Minnesota winner in 2018. The two first met when Derek brought a criminal suspect to a medical facility, where Kellie had been working as a radiologist. Ironically, it was at the same center that Floyd was declared dead earlier this week.

The two have been married since 2010. During the Mrs. Minnesota competition, Kellie had spoken extremely highly of the former police officer, characterizing her now ex-husband as a “softie” despite his job as a police officer. She added that Derek was a rare gentleman.

Kellie said that she came to America when she was a child after her family fled Laos where she had been born in. She has two children, both with her former husband. Her first husband has reportedly passed away some time before, according to the Daily Mail.

Kellie’s announcement of divorce comes on the same day the Derek Chauvin has been arrested for third-degree murder and manslaughter. It has also been announced that his bail has been set at $500,000, with no special conditions attached to his release.

Another irony is that Kellie had herself a legal incident regarding forgery, which has so far been reported as the apparent cause of the altercation that eventually led to the death of Floyd.

According to the Daily Mail, Kellie had been charged for writing an unclear check at a grocery store for $42.24. The incident took place in 2005 when she was still married to her ex-husband. It has been reported that this incident has been closed after she paid the money in full.
