The city of Minneapolis has declared the state of emergency following several nights of riots filled with violence, looting, ransacking, and burning following George Floyd’s death.
Demanding that the police officers presumed to be responsible for Mr. Floyd’s death are held responsible, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets and resorted to civil disturbances.
All across the city, riots and fires have started taking place whereas some protesters were seen looting stores and burning private properties in the process.
According to the reports, several stores, including Walmart, AutoZone, Target, and Wendy’s were ransacked and set on fire despite Floyd family’s pleas for peaceful protests.
Among other reported incidents, what is believed to be an apartment building was engulfed by flames, an elderly woman in a wheelchair got attacked and doused with a fire extinguisher, and a man got shot and killed.
Meanwhile, as the riots are taking place across the city, armed locals have been seen wielding guns and standing in front of businesses to protect them from rioters and looters.
Slamming the actions of the violent protesters was Minneapolis Police Chief John Elder who called them “disrespectful” for going against Floyd family’s calls to hold peaceful protests.
“If people are there to truly honor the man and his family this isn’t how you do it and it’s so disrespectful and it’s heartbreaking,” Elder said.
“People are utilizing this as a purpose just to make bad decisions.”
According to the KSTP report, a source has informed them that the city has called for the support of the National Guard to secure the city.
Meanwhile, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has issued a state of emergency.
The protests follow after the death of George Floyd who had been seen pleading for help moments before passing out due to a police officer kneeling on his neck.
As seen in the disturbing video taken at the time of George’s arrest, officer Derek Chauvin was kneeling the man who was lying facedown on the pavement and crying out for help. Meanwhile, the other cops stood by watching and failed to act until George lost consciousness.
Shortly after the disturbing arrest, Floyd died.
According to the family’s attorney, Benjamin Crump, officer Chauvin needs to be charged with murder whereas he called for the cop’s partners to be charged as murder accomplices.
The case is being investigated by the FBI.
