Midwives have spoken out and warned new mothers about the dangers of taking part in a new trend which encourages women to remove their wound dressings and take selfies with their C-section cuts.

As the doctors and midwives have warned after the reckless act became a trend, opening sealed wound dressings can put new mothers at life-threatening risks by allowing bacteria to enter their bloodstream.

According to health experts, removing the dressings too early can lead to wound infections that may result in life-threatening sepsis.

While mothers claim they have plenty of reasons for showing off and comparing the aftermath of C-section with other mums, a Hull University Hospitals team of nurses spoke out after seeing an increasing number of new mothers doing this.

“We are becoming increasingly concerned about the number of women who are removing their dressings so they can take photographs and post them on Facebook,” Melanie Lee of the Hey Baby group expressed.

“Women who have just given birth and those who have just had surgery are at increased risk of developing infection already.

“So it is essential their wounds remain covered until a health professional says dressings are safe to be removed.”

As the experts added, sepsis is hard to spot due to its mild symptoms but can quickly lead to organ failure, loss of limbs, and even death.

“We’re sharing more and more on social media and, sometimes, people post these images on their pages because they want to know if their wound is normal,” Melanie added.

“But they need to realize that they increase the risk of the wound becoming infected if they remove the dressing and these infections could lead to sepsis.”
