Fifty-five-year-old Michelle Obama will be donating more than $500,000 to support the education of girls worldwide, which are proceeds from her bestselling memoir. The former first lady seems to have taken Giving Tuesday very seriously.
Talking about her book, Michelle revealed that she feels incredibly humbled and blessed by the response she is receiving to her book over the past year and that she wished to channel this enthusiasm towards girls all over the world.
Through this donation, she wishes to help more brilliant and bold girls reach their highest potential, climbing their path towards becoming the women these girls are meant to be.
The previous year, The Obama Foundation, laid by Barack Obama, the former president, and his wife launched their initiative, the Girls Opportunity Alliance. This is meant to support international efforts to make sure more girls have access to education.
Michelle Obama will be traveling to Asia this month with actress Julia Roberts, the co-host of Today, Jenna Bush Hager, and others as the foundation’s work’s part. The trip would spotlight girls as well as organizations that empower them.
Mrs. Obama said on Tuesday that she has always thought that it is her responsibility to help others. She credited her grandparents and her parents to teach her the duty of giving back.
She further revealed that it is a value that she has tried to live by her entire life, as she feels that it is not sufficient to only think about oneself and making one’s way through life.
Mrs. Obama feels that Thanksgiving is an occasion that encourages individuals to be charitable and the money that she will be donating proceeds from Becoming’s merchandise, which sold over 11 million copies.
As per The Obama Foundation, the donation with fund existing projects by Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund as well as to fund new projects.
