Michael Jordan, the former NBA star and the Chicago Bulls icon, has vowed to make a sizeable donation towards the recovery of the Bahamas following the battering by Hurricane Dorian.
Mr. Jordan, who also owns property in one of the Caribbean islands, has pledged $1 million to rebuild the archipelago after the destructive Category 5 hurricane made landfall.
As the former basketball player explained, he will be closely “tracking the situation” to make sure that his contributions will be spent wisely and in the right areas.
“I am devastated to see the destruction that Hurricane Dorian has brought to the Bahamas, where I own property and visit frequently. My heart goes out to everyone who is suffering and to those who have lost loved ones,” Jordan said in an emotional statement released by his manager.
“As the recovery and relief efforts continue, I will be tracking the situation closely and working to identify non-profit agencies where the funds will have the most impact.
“The Bahamian people are strong and resilient and I hope that my donation will be of help as they work to recover from this catastrophic storm.”
Previously, Jordan received worldwide praise for donating $2 million towards the relief efforts following Hurricane Florence that slammed the Carolinas.
“It’s truly devastating for me to see the damage that Hurricane Florence is doing to my beloved home state of North Carolina and to the surrounding areas,” he announced last year.
“The recovery effort will be massive, and it will take a long time to repair the damage and for families to get back on their feet.”
According to the United Nations report, Hurricane Dorian, which is one of the most destructive calamities in the Bahamas’ history, resulted in a minimum of 50 casualties and over 70,000 people being left homeless.
