Metal Detector Enthusiasts Discovered A 4000-Year-Old Bronze Age Gold Necklace In Cumbria Fields


Billy Vaughan, 54, is a metal detectorist who was fortunate enough to discover a beautiful 4,000 year old torc in the fields worth tens and thousands of pounds.

He was exploring the fields near his house in town Whitehaven, Cumbria. The torc is made up of 22 carat gold and is said to have been unearthed from the Bronze Age.

A friend of Mr Vaughan helped him identify this piece which he dug out from 5 inched below the ground. The torc is valued at 11,000 Euros now.

When Billy approached a jeweler with the torc, he was astonished to discover that it was made up of 22 carats pure gold and weighed 11oz. The 11 k Euros, price of the piece is not only because of its weight but also can be credited to its historical significance.

However, the current price is still subject to more research and its historical significance might land its founder on a heap of fortune.

Speaking to the DailyMail UK, he said: ‘I’d only been detecting six months and I was out by myself on a field I must have been in dozens of times before, spending seven or eight hours going through it.

‘This time I got a strong signal so I dug down five inches and saw it. My first reaction was it was a piece of climbing equipment, or perhaps coupling from a tractor. I never thought it could be gold.”

Well, to his utter surprise, it turned out to be gold. After digging out the torc, Billy kept on digging for the following hour and a half.

Then an idea stuck his brain to ask his friend about the metal piece. It was after his friend recognized the picture that Billy was in hysterics that he had discovered treasure by chance.

Mr Vaughan is a care worker who did not waste a minute in alerting the local museum about his historically evident excavation. Now, the coroner will rule whether his find is actually a treasure under the Treasure Act (1996) or not.

If the torc turns out to be a state treasure, Billy will have to surrender it to the museum for the price decided by the Treasure Valuation Committee.Ant Stealing
