A radio producer explained why men should always pay on the first date.
36-year-old Jana Hocking from Sydney said that if a ‘perfectly lovely guy’ can’t pay for the bill, she’s ‘instantly turned off.’
In an entertaining post for news.com.au, Jana said: “So let’s end this debate once and for all and just say, blokes pay for the first date. It’s hot, it’s manly, and will have us bragging to our friends.”
The single radio producer also referenced Helen Fisher, a human behavior researcher and anthropologist, who said: “Women want to know if a man will spend his resources on her. For millions of years they needed a partner to provide for their young, and they keep looking for that signal.”
Jana also says that the only time it is acceptable to split the bill is when you are no longer interested in a second date.
“I’ve been on dates when I’ve known fairly early that the guy wasn’t for me and absolutely insisted on paying half, because I couldn’t live with the guilt of walking away knowing he had just splurged on a big bill for nothing,” she wrote.
The 36-year-old also said that the first date does not have to be fancy as some of the unforgettable dates are a happy hour at a local pub and just a simple picnic in the park.
Her remarks left the internet divided, with one person commenting: “I think it’s hotter to find a woman who isn’t just out to use men as an atm, and demonstrate that they believe in real equality by splitting the bill.”
Another wrote: “No, the biggest turn off is women who scream for equality and then expect men to pay for everything.”
A third added: “You invite someone out, you pay for the meal. It’s basic etiquette and has nothing to do with gender. It doesn’t have to be anywhere expensive, just conducive to good conversation.”
