Measles Outbreak In Congo Resulted In Thousands Of Casualties In 2019


According to the reports, thousands of people have died due to measles in 2019 in Congo alone.

Dubbed the “world’s worst outbreak” by the World Health Organization, the measles outbreak in Congo cost 6,000 people their lives.

For comparison, the number is more than two times bigger than that of some 2,200 people who died from Ebola following the disease’s outbreak in August 2018.

While the spreading of Ebola gained far more attention on the global scale, experts have warned that over 300,000 have been infected with measles in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2019.

As the WHO suggested, the reason for the country’s mass-scale progression of the disease is in its lack of funding and limited health resources.

While over $26 million was already sent to DRC to assist the country in its battle against measles, WHO claimed a lot more was required to overcome the crisis.

In addition to the lack of resources and funding, healthcare workers have a hard time reaching and operating in secluded areas whereas jabs are limited in places where armed groups are in control.

According to the reports, the majority of deaths caused by the country’s measles outbreak were newborns and infants with weak immune systems.
