A former mayor has resigned from his position as a councilor after coming under scrutiny for comparing Black Lives Matter protesters to monkeys in his Facebook post.
68-year-old Peter Kraus from the UK is an ex-mayor, and now an ex-councilor, who upset fellow officials and residents of West Wales after sharing side-by-side photos of BLM protesters and monkeys, presumably with the intention to compare the behavior of the two groups.
In the upper photo shared by Kraus, monkeys are seen jumping and climbing on a car with a person inside. In the bottom photo, a group of protesters is seen standing on a police vehicle and vandalizing the car.
After facing a backlash from the local community, the mayor removed his post and initially suggested that his account was hacked. Later on, however, he allegedly admitted he’s responsible for posting the photos.
“I have lots of black and white friends around the world. I have never in my whole life been racist in any way or form,” Kraus insisted.
“The picture in question actually means to me that some people are worse than animals and enjoy destroying things, whether it be vehicles, buildings or statutes.”
After the post went viral, fellow officials had complained to the council whereas a statement by the Pembroke Dock Town Council confirmed that Mr. Kraus had resigned.
Slamming the actions of the 68-year-old was also councilor Joshua Beynon who branded the post “derogatory” and called it “the lowest of the low.”
“While it seems that there is a lot of hatred and negativity around, this whole event has highlighted the urgent need to fight racism that is clearly evident in our county,” he expressed.
