James Mattis has lashed out at Trump and accused the 45th US president of fomenting the January 6 assault on the Capitol.
As the former United States Secretary of Defense, who is also known as Jim Mattis, insisted as he suggested Trump was to blame for the insurrection, the country is facing “internal threats” that should be addressed “with every bit as much gravity as the external problems, and perhaps more so.”
“There are also internal threats right now,” Mattis said before calling out Trump over his alleged role in inciting the insurrection by pointing out “the lack of unity on the consensual underpinnings of our democracy, and what we saw on Jan. 6, fomented by a sitting president.”
In his Thursday speech which took place during an online event, the former defense chief shifted attention to internal threats after addressing external concerns such as international terrorism and other world powers including Russia, China, and North Korea.
He also claimed that “people are much more inclined to listen to conspiracy theories and other things when they’re losing hope.”
The feud between Trump and Mattis continues years after the two allies started drifting apart. Back in December 2018, Mattis stepped down from his position after disagreeing with Trump on his decision to pull troops out of Syria.
In November last year, the gap between the two further widened after Mattis blasted the former president’s ‘America First’ policy.
“That says it all about Mattis. Obama fired him. I should have fired him sooner. Did best work after he was gone. World’s most overrated general!” Trump responded to Mattis’ article in which the former Defense Secretary called for the foreign policy to be abolished.
