Realtors in the state of Texas now have the chance to drop the term ‘master bedroom’ from their use and replace the old terminology with less stigmatic wording.
According to the reports, the Houston Association of Realtors in Texas reached an agreement that the agents will be allowed to replace the word ‘master’ with ‘primary’ after some critics pointed out that the old terminology hints to times of slavery.
While the realtors will now have the option to refer to master bedrooms as primary bedrooms instead, the association explained that the old terminology can still be used in listings.
Following their decision, the MLS Advisory Group released a statement in which they confirmed their commitment to regularly review the terminology used to adjust to the needs of the market.
“The updates to Primary Bedroom and Primary Bath were among nine requests for review that were submitted by members and considered at the most recent meetings,” they explained.
According to the association, “the consensus was that Primary describes the rooms equally as well as Master while avoiding any possible misperceptions.”
Following the changes, some realtors have already changed their listings and renamed master bedrooms to primary bedrooms.
One of the supporters of the new terminology is Tiffany Curry, the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices owner, who told the Chronicle that the term master “represents a stigma and place in time that we need to move forward from.”
“As a progressive, diverse city, Houston should be reflective of its citizenship,” Curry expressed in an interview about the changes.
